  • I've been feeling rather sickly lately.  That's about all.

I bought a shed to house all of the equipment cluttering up the garage.  That pretty much blows the money I would have had for Costa Rica.  I feel good about my decision, besides, I have been kind of sickly.

    One question though.....

    Root canal or extraction?

  • If it's your last tooth a root canal. If you've got lots of others consider the extraction, but it depends on where it is located.

  • RCT + restoration id personally talk to the dr about a captek crown they are beautiful ... you are always better saving the teeth you can why you can still save them... extraction also = loss of bone and that can damage you down the road if proximal teeth wind up with a  problem....hmph this coming from the girl who literally cried when her boss said yeah you need RCT...

  • I've opted for extraction twice -- both top far back molars.  I had really good bone in the area, and the cross bites are in good shape, whatever that means.  I think it means that the tooth directly below hits the next tooth so they won't move or anything like that.

Another tooth, a different situation, I might consider other options.  But root canals, ugh.

  • Both sound scary, so I would not listen to me.  But those comments above me have some really great advice, so I think you're gonna be all good.

  • whatever is the best in the long run, I would say- as long as you get a gold tooth in its place- OR a gold star!

I hope whatever it is, it's minimum pain

  • I'd have the root canal, especially if they think they can save the tooth.  If they can't save the tooth, they will sheer it off at the gumline so they can put in a post and put a fake top part of the tooth over it. I have 2 of these 'caps'.

If they extract the tooth, you will have to have some type of partial plate or false tooth made, unless u have a dental implant, which is implanting a pin into your jawbone and sticking a tooth on it which I'm thinking of but can't bring myself to do,  but you won't be able to have a cap.

They could also put a 'bridge' by connecting a phony tooth to the teeth on either side of it.

My philosophy is,  if you have to cut your arm off, eventually, why not just start at the fingers and work your way up slowly through the years, instead of lopping it off all at once?

    Good LUCK!!!

  • P.S., the root canal is really not THAT bad, painwise, a sharp needle in the gum at the beginning is the worst part, then it all goes numb.

Some people think they're easy, but I was quite unhappy with the yanking out of the stringy root and the smell of burning tissue (just like hair).  So tell them your scared, even shake and tear up a little bit so they take extra care, then close your eyes and you could put Vicks or something good on your upper lip for the smell, but I just stuck it out and it wasn't that bad.

You'll also get to have a dental dam used on you so nothing accidently falls down your throat.

Get the root canal and don't worry.  What doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger and you seem pretty strong to me! :)

  • In my first comment, I said CAN'T where I meant CAN. If they CAN save the tooth, the sheer it off at the gumline and can still use the hard part under the gum to mount the post in.  If they can't save it, they take it all out, like grandma.

  • Both are painful as hell and the extraction is cheaper. The end.
